Celebrating Neighbours

In 1985, Neighbours was launched on Australian television, a daily drama series which aired every weekday in the early evenings. The show centred around the lives of three households living on Ramsay Street, a cul-de-sac in a fictional Melbourne suburb.

By the end of the 1980s, the show had been seen in over sixty countries, and tens of millions of people around the world were regularly watching the daily activities of the Ramsay, Robinson and Clarke families. The show enjoyed phenomenal popularity in the United Kingdom where more than a quarter of the population became hooked on the mix of drama, comedy and sunshine that was unlike anything seen on any show before.

Over the next three decades, the show's run continued making it the longest running drama series on Australian television and one of the country's most successful media exports. It served as a training ground for new talent and many of the show's actors went on to Hollywood stardom or became icons in the music industry.

In 2022 it was announced that production was to end, and in July that year, millions of viewers in Australia and the United Kingdom watched what we thought would be the very last episode of the show that had been in their lives for so long.

However following a landmark deal with Amazon, production restarted on Neighbours in 2023 with 400 new episodes promised over two years, taking the show to its 40th anniversary this year.

It has been confirmed that Neighbours is once again coming to an end, since Amazon have not extended their deal. Production is expected to end in July and sadly, unless another partner can be found, the show will be 'rested' by the end of the year.

The official announcement states...

We are sad to announce that Neighbours will be resting from December 2025. New episodes from the 40th anniversary season will continue to air on Prime Video and Ten four times a week until the end of the year, with all the big soapie twists and turns that our viewers love. Jason Herbison, Neighbours Executive Producer said: "Audiences all around the world have loved and embraced Neighbours for four decades and we are very proud of the huge success over the last two years including often appearing as one of the Top 10 titles in the UK and the show's first ever Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Daytime Series in 2024. As this chapter closes, we appreciate and thank Amazon MGM Studios for all that they have done for Neighbours - bringing this iconic and much-loved series to new audiences globally. We value how much the fans love Neighbours and we believe there are more stories of the residents of Ramsay Street to tell in the future."

To the wonderful and talented cast and crew, we send our best wishes and thanks for everything you have given the fans. Hopefully this is just another bump in the road and not really the final chapter. But whatever the future holds, you can be proud to have played your part in one of the most successful shows in the world.
